oh how happy you have made me...

I know that technically speaking, money can't buy you happiness. But when I opened the shoe box today to reveal the Hallowed Halls Oxfords, let me just tell you that right or wrong, materialistic or shallow....my heart was singing!

I have pretty small feet, and can make anything from a size 5-6.5 work. I had heard that these shoes ran small, but I went ahead and ordered the 6 and they are perfectly roomy for me. I found them to be wonderfully comfortable, with plenty of room width wise, as well. The tweed is darling, and reminds me of the Twilit Skirt, because some of the threads are metallic, it's very subtle, but a cute touch. You can see Maria's review for another take. I tried mine on with tights, so you could see them that way as well.

The shoes are squeal-worthy adorable in every way!

OOTD's - First Time for Everything

When the Openwork Vines skirt first showed up on Anthropologie's website, I saw my name written all over it. I ordered it immediately but that same urgency did not translate into my wearing this skirt right away - in fact, it's hung in my closet for months now! Today I finally decided to wear it for church.

Another first for me? I went thrifting! It was 1/2 price Friday at a local thrift store, and I had some time to kill before an appointment, so Graham and I cruised the store. I can't say that I've caught the bug, but it was fun to look for treasures. Among them, these cute gingham Gap shorts! I was happy to find them, since the ones at J.Crew hadn't worked out. Even happier when they rung up for a whopping $1.50. And here's how old these shorts are - they are a size 6 and snug on my waist - my how sizing has changed over the years! I put these on after church - it's only been a couple of hours, and I've already gotten my money's worth ;)

good things come to those who wait

I missed out on the original Scarf Tied Oxfords from Anthropologie. Truth be told I'm not really sure I could have pulled off this version...but oh how I loved them...and hunted for them on Ebay, which is not easy to do with a brand name of "All Black" They eluded me for months.

Then I saw a Sara post about Mod Cloth's version, and I nearly turned a cartwheel in all my excitement.

Which was short lived when I realized they were all sold out. Alas, Alicia posted about them on her blog too, this time being sold at Imelda's. And what do you know? Sold out in my size! Blast! They had the equally adorable green version in a 7, and while I usually wear a 5/6, I considered them in desperation.
But alls well that ends well. Anthropologie's Hallowed Halls Oxfords were released on the website (I think today?) And Oh. My. These, are the pair I've been waiting for. I ordered them, and I might never leave my window waiting for the UPS man to deliver them...

I am a happy girl.

Going to Great Lengths

Today I'm wearing my J. Crew 5" Chinos (center) and I have to say, I think I might be a short-shorts convert.

How about you? Are you a NO shorts, bermuda length, 7", 5" or confident in 3" kind of girl? I haven't had any luck at Old Navy or J.Crew finding the 7" in-store (maybe they are online only?), but the shorts I've recently had hemmed seem to fall around that length. I prefer the extra coverage when I'm going to be sitting in public. I'm pretty sure looking at these comparison pictures, that I'll never buy another pair of bermuda's again.
No matter what the inseam, I'm still not a shorts every day girl. Which is why I was so excited to receive my Banana Republic Busted Boyfriend Chinos in the mail today.
LOVE THEM! I could not believe how perfectly they fit when I tried them on, and you don't even notice the "destroyed" areas, it's very, very subtle. I am wearing th 00P for reference, so keep vanity-sizing in mind if you decide to order ;) Not bad at 40% off, either. I love all the promos Banana Republic has been offering lately!

sale shopping to keep me sane

I'll be honest, I'm more of a September Back-to-School mom, then a let's spend the day at the pool, Summer mom... I need retail therapy to see me through these months of drippy popsicles, dirty feet and brothers who bicker.

I bought the Lemon Chiffon blouse really impulsively, and then quick went to Polyvore to justify it's impending shipment to my closet. Now I'm not sure how I was ever going to live without it?

Snootie & Cutie Patootie

My husband took my two oldest on a church sponsered camp-out over the weekend. While the big boys were off in the wilderness, Graham and I set out for the mall. And not our mall, but the other mall that is 45 minutes from my home and has much better stores. I don't usually brave the trek with all three, or have enough time to run there during my preschool window, so this was a great opportunity! I was most excited to stop at J. Crew and try out their shorts. Unfortunatly, they didn't have my size in the cute gingham checks, but I decided to try the size up. I also grabbed some 5" chinos and a few cute tops.

Beware! RANTING AHEAD!!! I took my selections into the back fitting room, and while there were other women trying things on in there I didn't see an employee to unlock the door. I left the stroller with Graham while I poked my head out to see if she/he were nearby. The sales person caught my eye and beckoned me to the fitting room at the front of the store. So I popped back in to get the baby and no sooner was the guy behind me telling me "You can't use this fitting room. It's closed. You need to come up front" Obviously, it's not what he said, but the way he said it - he sounded so annoyed. Okay great, I have no problem coming up front, except, I DO need to bring my child with me, you ding dong!

So in I go up front, and I didn't have good luck with the gingham - they were literally falling off. The chinos were okay, especially with a belt, and the fact that they were roomy in the waist allowed them to sit low on my hips and long enough to not feel scandalous in.

Online there was a promo for 20% off all shorts, when I asked a different sales girl whether this was the case in-store as well, I was told no. So I decided to just buy the one pair of shorts in pale blush because I hadn't noticed the color online, along with a cutie patootie blouse I had never noticed online either, a sale belt, and a great pair of boyfriend chinos. In the fitting room "return to sales floor rack/cart" I left behind the other 4 pairs of shorts (two of them being too big (gingham), and the other two with the intention of buying online with the 20% off) I also hung up 3 tops that were too big (J.Crew sizing is redunkulous).

All this to say, that I bought about 1/3 of what I brought into the fitting room with me but when I walked to the register I saw the girl fitting room attendant making a face and talking to the other employee saying "she's not getting any of this?" in the snootiest-patootiest sort of way. I felt so embarassed. It was really uncomfortable, and made me want to plop my other purchases down and walk out. It wasn't as if I had left the merchandise strewn all throughout my room, unhung, inside out or on the floor. I put it back to the return area at the front of the fitting room and clearly someone is stationed there with the JOB of returning those things out to the sales floor. I know this sounds petty, but it really turned me off. Boo for rude sales associates! The overall vibe at my (not-so) local store is not friendly :(

And it turns out this blouse IS on the website, I just hadn't noticed it before. It has a side zip which isn't my favorite and it does make the top tuck in funny...but I love the neckline detail so much! I'd actually buy this in a second color! But only online, since I don't want to go back to the store any time soon and be treated like an inconvenience (if I could insert a sticking-out the tongue smiley here, I would!)

This is another pair of bermuda shorts from Old Navy that I recently had hemmed. I'm so happy with the length that I took 3 more pairs in yesterday for the same chop-job!

I've already been to a dr.'s appointment this morning, and now we're off to our first swim lesson of the summer!

Gotta keep 'em busy!

OOTD - My 1st Anthro Purchase

The Saltpan Bermuda's were featured on the cover of Anthropologie in March 2007 and I had to have them. It was the polka dots that did me in.

When I received them they were way too long. Actually, they were big in the waist too, which made them sit even lower on my hips and thus making the length pretty ridiculous. Despite their ill fit I still wore them on vacation....

A lapse in fashion judgement for sure!
And then I retired them to my closet, not to be worn again. Love them as I might, I did not enjoy looking like a frumpy-stumpy when I wore them.

Finally, last week I decided to take them (and several other pairs of bermuda's) to the dry cleaners and inquire about a hem. I am horrible about taking my clothes in for alterations. And when she rung up my total, I remembered that hems don't come cheap - $15 a pair! I guess it was worth it since they are now wearable :)

So apparently, DSW doesn't send shipping confirmations? I wasn't expecting to find these shoes at my doorstep today! I had to quick switch out of my flip flops and try them on. They are super cushy and comfortable. I love them!

Here is my lame attempt at trying to show you my starfish earrings. That didn't work out...but you can see the cute detail of the shorts. I think I'll keep them forever!

OOTD - Party x 2

This morning as I was getting dressed, all I could think was how much cuter my outfits would be with yellow shoes. Clearly DSW is no Zappos or Endless, because I haven't even received my shipping confirmation yet. I've been spoiled by free overnight service!

Today Sawyer's little camp is having a pizza party and Harrison's 1st grade class is having it's end of the year celebration. You have no idea how much easier it makes my life that both boys have parties today - now no one is crying that life is cruel and unfair. Wonderful!

Easy OOTD, Tricky Blogger Template

I am having major blogger angst at the moment! Can anyone help me before I get a hammer and smash my computer screen? For some reason all of my information that used to be in the right-hand column of this blog is now at the bottom of the page and I can't seem to fix it! SO FRUSTRATING!!! I go into my toolbar to add/arrange page elements and everything is shown where it should be - on the right hand side. I click save, I click apply to blog, and then there it is still on the bottom! I don't get it? What happened, and how do I get it back???? Can anyone help me?

Here is what it looks like when I go into add/arrange page elements

but as you can see from my blog, all of the archives/followers/labels/etc. are now on the bottom. Banging my head.

.....moving on to much more simple things.....my outfit of the day is as easy as it gets! I recently bought this tee from Banana Republic and I adore the pretty detail - it really dresses up your basic white tee.

I can't find it online, but my store had tons, so yours probably does too ;)

What I Ordered Instead

Unable to get past the ankle strap on the Seychelles and the fact that the Aerosoles weren't as cute, I decided to scan some online sites again in search of my yellow sandals. That's when I landed upon these at DSW - only two pairs left, and one of them in my size!
Ta Da!

If you are a size 10, you can snag them here

Much like my black sandal search, I'm glad I combed through the hundreds of available styles to find something I not only love, but that won't chop me off at the ankles, either.

And I've got grand plans for those recently acquired black sandals - they are popping up in a lot of my Polyvore sets these days. Here is some fun I had with a couple of new tops from Anthro - I don't own either of them, but I'm thinking maybe I should ;)

OOTD & Help me Shoe Shop

I bought this cute little dress last year when I was enormously pregnant, but optimistic that I'd shrink in time to wear it the following Summer. The sandals were a Target clearance find, also purchased last year, and finally seeing the light of day.

I love adding a pop of color with my shoes, and one color I don't own yet is yellow. I took a quick inventory and yellow shoes will actually pair with bunches of things already hanging in my closet so I'm ready to pull the trigger. I've narrowed it down to the heels in this Polyvore, I think the flats are adorable, but since I'm only buying one pair, the heels can more easily be dressed up, while the flats are strictly casual. My favorite pair are the Seychelles, but I think the other pair would be more flattering on my short legs, since they do not have an ankle strap. Those are made by Aerosoles, so I know either one will be equally comfortable. The price difference is $30. What do you think #1 or #3?

Short Stories on Sunday

I've recently come to the conclusion that as wrong as they might sound on a 31 year old mom, short-shorts are in fact more flattering then bermudas or capris when said mom is a midget. It's hard for me to embrace my legs, but the fact that I will be sitting outside in 100 degree temperatures for two weeks straight while my boys take swim lessons, well that drives me to the mall to find some shorts I won't melt in.

Unfortunately, The Loft, where I used to buy probably 75% of my pants has fallen so far off the vanity-sizing deep end, that I can no longer wear much of anything from their store :( I am genuinely frustrated by this, since The Loft is pretty much a go-to store for my demographic.

Size 0 - roll eyes.
I think I'll check out Old Navy on Monday and hope for better luck. In the meantime, here is a leggy OOTD for church. I would like to state for the record that when my hands are at my sides, this dress does fall below my fingertips ;)

Answers Part II, Plus OOTD

My Biggest Beauty Secret Revealed...
So truthfully, I don't have any fast fixes for being fabulous. I'm not all that intuitive with putting colors together and I am really lame with hair. So my #1 secret is to COPY. Fashion Blogs, Polyvore, and magazines are all great sources of inspiration, and when I see something I like I try to figure out how I can recreate it. For example, my OOTD (Outfit of the Day), came from right here http://www.polyvore.com/wearing_2010/set?id=18510776 I am a really visual person, so seeing this color combination was like a light bulb going off and I immediately had an outfit ready to go! The same is true for hair and make-up. I have watched lots of YouTube tutorials and I can't tell you how much I've learned about contouring and curling. I am by no means an expert, but I now have some go-to routines that make getting ready quicker, because I am not fumbling around or spending time staring at my products and wondering how to use them. Whenever I can, I try to get ready before my husband leaves for work. When I can't do that, I put a video on for my four year old and the Johnny Jump-Up on the bathroom door for the baby and I hope they'll stay entertained long enough for me to look presentable.

J. Crew & J. Russell have Reconciled
I still think their clothing looks best on the tall lanky types, but recently I've been buying more tops and cardigans and find they work! Hooray! Joni, I believe the cardigan you are asking about is the Celosia in Warm Wheat I really like J. Crew for Mon-Fri and Anthro for church on Sunday. If I had a J. Crew closer to my home (the nearest one is close to an hour away) I know I'd buy more - their shipping charges make my heart bitter.

Wash & Repeat
I do follow care labels, but luckily my washer has a "hand wash" cycle and I am spared from any actual manual labor. I also confess that unless I spill something or sweat in a delicate item, I usually don't wash it at all. Gross, but true. I hang all of my clothing to dry, unless I am hoping for shrinkage. I really think this keeps clothes looking newer, longer.

Accessorized
I don't switch purses often. Currently, I have three leather Coach bags in rotation - a white satchel, an orange satchel and a Tattersall tote. This one is my favorite and it's surprisingly neutral.

And these are the most comfortable shoes I own - I could live in flip flops in the Summer and Clarks is pretty much synonomous with comfort!

Playing Favorites
Oooh, my top 3 purchases? Of all time? That is really hard. Too hard. I think I'll just say that my 3 favorite places to shop at the moment are Anthropologie, Banana Republic and J. Crew (see, we really did mend our ways!) and my favorite purchase of the year would have to be this dress, it makes my heart sing (loudly, and off key)

Answers, Part I

Before I was a Boy Mom
I have never been career driven, ever since a very young age, I wanted to get married and have kids and be a full-time homemaker. I think this stemmed from being raised by a very hard working single mom. In my mind, I wanted the fairy tale two parent home, with a mom who baked cookies and a dad that considered me his princess. Since that wasn't going to happen, I reconciled to be the soccer mom myself and find a husband who would take care of me and treat me like his princess. EVERYONE tried talking sense into me - telling me I needed a degree, that I was too smart not to go to college, and that my desire for an old-fashion family was, well, completely old fashion.

Interestingly enough, I found myself dating the valedictorian of our class, who was headed off to an Ivy League school after graduation. With no proposal on the horizon, I had to do something, so I enrolled at a local private college and spent 3 semesters living on campus. I had a 3.8 GPA when I decided I'd had my fill of the college experience (I majored in English/Secondary Education with a minor in Sociology) and dropped out. I also broke up with my med-school bound boyfriend because sheesh, he wasn't going to be marriage ready for years -lol (no seriously, there were other things, too!) I got my own charming little apartment(which I loved decorating!), and a job at Merck Pharmaceutical doing clerical work. Working for such a power-house company at that time I was actually earning a salary that exceeded what I would have made as a new teacher. I worked in the same department for 5 years and quit when I had my first son.

I am happy to say that I did travel quite a bit, including to Europe, before having my kids, but it's something I wish I had done more of! I was also lucky enough to have a mom that took us to museums, Broadway shows and five star restaurants - none of which I get to indulge in raising three young boys and having no babysitters to speak of. It's a season ;) I have no regrets about not finishing college, and I never feel inferior or embarrassed about it. Hey! I was smart enough to marry a good guy, and they are hard to find!

Jonathan + Jan
My husband and I met at church. At the time I was very seriously dating someone else, and he was too - but I didn't know it! In fact, I kept thinking he was an attractive, well established, kind gentleman and who could I set him up with? His girlfriend at the time attended her own church and since that is the only place I saw Jonathan, I didn't even know he was involved. As it worked out, both our relationships ended and I started to think maybe I should be the one to date such a nice guy! So my girlfriend at church invited us to random things together - like watching the hockey game at her house, leading a game for the teen group, etc. Finally, Jonathan asked me out on a date, but I still had an obstacle to clear....our almost 12 year age difference! I've always been considered "mature" for my age, and I was living in my own apartment with a full-time job, so I didn't know if Jonathan had a clue that I was only 20 at the time, while he was in his 30's - gulp.

Also, many people were convinced that Jonathan would never marry. One woman told me so at a ladies retreat and that I was setting myself up to be heartbroken since he was too happily independent to wed. A few months later, she sang the solo at our wedding ceremony ;) We dated a year before he proposed, and were engaged for nine months. This January we will celebrate 10 years of marriage. I'd call it wedded bliss, but marriage is HARD. I know we'll be together forever, but we certainly have our peeks and valleys.

Think Pink!
Jonathan and I have always wanted 3 or 4 children. Right now we both feel pretty maxed out raising our boys, but neither of us are ready to close the door completely on a fourth child. I do feel a certain sadness that I might not experience raising a daughter - braiding hair, dolls, prom dresses...they all give me pangs. However, when I'm pregnant "worry" isn't my middle name, it's my first - and my pregnancy with Graham was full of scares - low HCG levels, a cervical polyp that caused lots of bleeding, a cyst on his brain that I was told could be a soft marker for Down Syndrome, my high blood pressure, exposure to Fifth's Disease, the cord around his neck during delivery AND the fact that I hemorrhaged afterwards. I'm not sure I can sign on for any of that again. It's something I pray about often, and right now I can say I don't have a peace either way - so the decision remains unclear.

You need to get a hobby!
Hmm...other interests...I love to read, but it goes in waves and I'm really picky about what I like. I mostly enjoy realistic fiction or memoirs - a recent favorite was The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and an all-time favorite author for me is Kaye Gibbons (I'm not interested in Nicholas Sparks or Twilight but you can bet I loved the entire Shopaholic series) I also love my "celebrity rags" and subscribe to both People and Us Weekly. I watch almost no tv and I hate the movies. Going to movies, renting movies, previews for movies - just not my thing. When I do watch tv it's all reality shows, all found on 3 channels - HGTV, TLC and Bravo (Real Housewives are a guilty pleasure). I have a lot of fun hosting game nights - Taboo, Guesstures, Pictionary - I can get competitive! Obviously, I love to shop - but not just for myself! I adore buying clothes for my boys (especially layette!) and also buying for/decorating my house. Logistics prevent me from other things I enjoy - going out to eat, bike riding, working out, tennis, skiing, boating, actually relaxing on a vacation...but there will be time for those things again when my boys are older.

I don't work or work out
As mentioned above, I do not work out. I wish I did, because while I have gone back to my pre-pregnancy weight, trust me when I tell you that nothing is firm. I would love to tone up! My excuses for not exercising are as follows:
-No babysitter
-Paranoia about leaving my kids in the childcare room at the gym
-a baby who only lasts 15 minutes in the stroller when I take him on walks
-laziness
-I'm too tired

To keep my weight down, there is no secret to tell. I'm hungry! I try to eat as little as possible. It makes me cranky. It also makes me prone to using my calories on Starburst and potato chips instead of real meals. I am a very average weight for someone my height, and feel self conscious about my body, like most women do. In order to look good in the pictures I post, I take about 20 until I find an angle that flatters - lol.

Okay - that covers about half the questions that were asked, the others are more fashion oriented, so I will be back to answer those in another post! If you fell asleep reading this, wake up - shakes shoulders - its over!

101 - What Haven't We Covered Yet?

Post #101, and you've probably gotten to know me a bit through the daily ramblings...

I am a mom of three crazy boys, and I mean that literally
I live in the suburbs clearly, not the city.

Mom is my job title, and greatest privilege in life.
Most days I'm running after kids, running errands, and running up the credit card bill...
Anything else you'd like to know about me? This is your chance to ask me anything! I love getting to know more about bloggers, and I admit that I am a nosy-body and have enjoyed reading similar posts and having my questions answered. Plus, you've got to do something when you hit a milestone on your blog - so there ya go!

OOTD - Deeply Rooted

I'm glad I grabbed the Deeply Rooted Henley when it hit the sale - it arrived yesterday and it's adorable! The fit is comfy and roomy, except for the sleeves, which are somewhat snug in comparison. I layered a cami underneath, because the v-neck does dip on the low side. I'm off on errands and then to Harrison's last baseball game of the season tonight - no gardening on the schedule ;) Anthropologie Deeply Rooted Henley
